Nike, Burberry and H&M are among some of the big companies facing a boycott in China over their recent statements against forced labour in Xinjiang. MLI Senior Fellow Charles Burton joined CBC News to discuss this latest retaliation.
“This seems to be a coordinated retaliation by the Chinese government,” notes Burton. “Because the EU, the UK, the US and Canada, in addition to sanctioning the Chinese officials complicit in the Uyghur genocide, also sanctioned Xinjiang production and construction corp. [Xinjiang production and construction corp] is a military institute that has quite a lot of the farming land in China and specifically involved in cotton production, much of which is still done by hand by Uyghurs.”
