Munk Senior Fellow Philip Cross told Global News that he thought a deal on NAFTA was likely over the weekend, with some concessions by Canada on dairy. As he noted, “I don’t think the Americans are really interested in our cultural industries.”
Notably, Canada did end up making concessions that allowed for improved American access to those industries protected under Canada’s supply management system in return for a modified agreement that kept NAFTA’s dispute resolution mechanism. The new deal is called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
