Should Canada declare that China’s actions against Uyghurs in Xinjiang constitute a genocide? MLI Senior Fellow Charles Burton joined a prime time panel on CBC’s Power & Politics to discuss.
According to Burton, Beijing’s conduct clearly rises to the threshold of constituting a genocide. If Parliament votes to recognize that fact, it will seriously challenge Canada’s hitherto “passive” approach to China, which Burton identifies as “appeasement.” Furthermore, it will make it “very challenging for the government to resume any notion of free trade with China.”
