Several Canadian legal experts say more can be done to free Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig who are detained in China. Some are advocating for Ottawa to stop the extradition proceedings of Meng Wanzhou in exchange for the freedoms of these two Canadians. MLI senior fellow Charles Burton appears on CBC’s The Current to discuss the serious problems associated with indulging Canada’s hostage diplomacy.
“We cannot give into China’s kidnapping and menacing of Canada to pressure on an extradition case,” explains Burton. “We have to think about the precedent that this would set, emboldening the Chinese regime to engage in more of these kind of outrageous tactics.”
Burton goes on to discusses the actions that Ottawa can take to stand up against China’s bullying and intimidation tactics as Canada continues to be caught in the throes of this geopolitical conflict.
