Munk Senior Fellow Christian Leuprecht joined The Showgram with David Cooper to discuss the killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and the significance it has on the global Islamist movement.
“The broader impact of this is not significant, what I think what is significant is that the Americans located him in Kabul suggesting that, after the US troop withdrawal, Afghanistan might again become a safe haven for terrorist operatives,” said Leuprecht.
“It shows that the US is among the very few countries in the world that are engaged in extrajudicial killings and whose security interests span the globe, and that once you mastermind the killing of Americans … the United States has very long memories and has significant strategic patience and resources to track you down not only to make you pay for your crimes but also as a deterrent to others.”
