On September 25, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute hosted an insightful and timely conversation between two leading voices on global issues – Einat Wilf, former Knesset member and expert on Israel’s foreign policy, and Casey Babb, Senior Fellow at MLI.
The conversation centered on Israel’s strategic position in a rapidly changing Middle East, and the alarming rise of antisemitism globally, with a particular focus on the situation in Canada.
Opening remarks were delivered by Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley on the Institute’s commitment to continue playing a crucial role as a catalyst for these necessary conversations and ensuring that Canada’s voice remains strong in calling out Anti-Semitism.
In the wake of Hamas’s brutal terror attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel faces many security challenges. Wilf and Babb discussed the far-reaching implications of the ongoing war against Hamas and Hezbollah, especially in the face of growing hostility and misinformation campaigns.
Wilf, a prominent voice on Zionism and the Jewish state, explained how inaccurate narratives around Israel often fuel antisemitism in Western countries, including Canada. She pointed out that while criticism of Israel is legitimate, it too often blurs into a broader hostility towards Jews.
The discussion also touched on the possibilities for a new Middle East, shaped by the recent Abraham Accords, which Wilf argued could pave the way for deeper collaboration between Israel and its Arab neighbors.
A diverse audience of attendees, which including policy-makers, journalists, scholars, and leaders from the Jewish community, engaged in a candid and constructive dialogue that reflected a wide range of perspectives on the challenges ahead for Israel and the global Jewish community.
Through events like these, MLI reaffirms its commitment to supporting Israel’s right to security and sovereignty, while also standing firm against the surge of antisemitism that threatens to erode the social fabric of Canada and other democratic nations.
