MLI Senior Munk Fellow Christian Leuprecht was on the Roy Green Show to discuss the possibility of the Trudeau government enacting the Federal Emergencies Act. The powers awarded by the Act are extensive and would allow the federal government to take over provincial powers and control the movement of people and/or goods.
“There are many concerns around this, whether the government can actually justify the act under section one of the charter,” explains Leuprecht. “Whether this is actually necessary, that is to say, are there provinces that cannot effectively cope under the current circumstances, and would the federal government be able to deliver better [than the provinces], which I think is ultimately the concern.”
Over the course of the interview, Leuprecht goes on to examine the federal government’s current response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Concluding the segment, Leuprecht also commented on Huawei and the impending 5G decision from the federal government.
