MLI Senior Fellow Sarah Teich joined CBC News to discuss the recent Canadian coalition to denounce arbitrary detentions by foreign states.
“This coalition is a good start, but it doesn’t strike me as enough,” explains Teich. “We still need to take actions that have teeth, we still need to be sanctioning those involved in arbitrary detention, respecting families of hostages, which typically have been ignored, and just taking meaningful action to back up this declaration.”
Teich goes on to discuss the use of sanctions, the need for domestic legislation, and how to what extent this declaration will have meaningful impacts.
