OTTAWA, March 6, 2013 – The Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI) releases the new issue of Inside Policy today, its flagship bi-monthly magazine, focusing on the fiscal and economic challenges and opportunities confronting decision-makers in Canada’s political and business domains.
“In this issue, we present commentaries and analyses from several distinguished economists who spent many years crafting federal budgets,” says Inside Policy’s Managing Editor James Anderson. “We also present insightful articles on a broad range of issues from international commerce to global security to energy policy.”
With the federal budget coming soon, Inside Policy opens with an article by economist Don Drummond, who calls upon the government to seize the opportunity to turn budget-making into a more coherent planning process. Former Deputy Minister of Finance Scott Clark and former Director of Fiscal Policy Peter DeVries also weigh in offering advice on how to ensure greater integrity and coherence to the budget-making process.
Inside Policy then looks to Stanley Hartt (another former Deputy Minister of Finance and later chief of staff to Prime Minister Mulroney) to examine the effect the EU and US debt crises are having on the world economy. Derek Burney, a former Canadian ambassador to the United States (and also a former PMO chief of staff) offers five prescriptions for how Canada can succeed in a global economy experiencing dramatic and turbulent transformations. In yet another insightful piece, ex-diplomat Colin Robertson examines the state of Canada-US cooperation.
Readers will find a new section entitled, “Partisan Perspectives,” which publishes opinions and analyses from those inside the political arena. In this issue, Minister of State for Finance Ted Menzies explains the budget-making process and opposition Finance critics Peggy Nash and Scott Brison offer their respective party’s advice to the Government on how to approach today’s fiscal and economic challenges.
