A Chinese tech giant filed more patents in Canada last year than any other company, evidence of what some observers say is a failure by Canada to secure the critical intellectual property rights needed to build next-generation technologies.
To make sense of China’s tightening grip on the intellectual property landscape in Canada, MLI Research Advisory Board Member Elliot Tepper spoke with Bill Kelly.
“There’s nothing inherently nefarious about it,” says Tepper, “except in this case, it happens to be China.”
“People have been raising the alarm for quite some time. Canada doesn’t really have a plan about what to do with intellectual property, whereas other countries do, China most particularly does… we have been very slow at transforming our research capacities into business opportunities.”
