Following an often-tumultuous negotiating process, the United States, Canada and Mexico have signed a new free-trade agreement, and it’s a good one. While no trade agreement will please everyone, the negotiators came to a deal that will deliver terrific economic benefits. As MLI Munk Senior Fellow Richard Owens, one of the leading Canadian commentators on intellectual property, innovation and trade explains, the IP reforms committed to in the USMCA agreement “will encourage economic growth and improve the innovation environment in Canada.” And they are good for our partners, too.
On May 23, MLI hosted a panel discussion in Washington D.C. to highlight the importance of the IP provisions in the USMCA and why ratifying the agreement swiftly is so important for all three countries.
