MLI Research Advisory Board member Christopher Sands discussed the future of NAFTA on The West Block. He told Eric Sorensen that the upcoming Mexican election could split the NAFTA talks, allowing Trump to do “bilateral with Mexico with the new president, and then suspend talks with Canada and come back to them next year.”
Sands also raised the possibility of that Prime Minister Trudeau could trigger an election earlier than planned next year. If the Canada-US trade war continues to escalate and NAFTA falls to pieces, “I think he might well say he needs a strong mandate to deal with Trump.”
