Canada should consider joining ballistic missile defence (BMD) as a way to deter and protect against nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) from North Korea and other rogue states, MLI Munk Senior Fellow Christian Leuprecht told the Current on CBC Radio One.
The danger posed by North Korea nuclear-armed ICBMs has not fully matured. But it would be a more strategic decision to join BMD today than at some point in the future.
BMD can play an important role in dealing with North Korea’s ambitions to become a nuclear-armed state.
Leuprecht concludes that, in the absence of BMD, “we leave ourselves open to compromising our sovereignty when it comes to international foreign or defence policy-making.”
