Ottawa released decisions on three major pipeline projects – Northern Gateway, Line 3 and Trans Mountain – this afternoon
OTTAWA, Nov. 29, 2016 – Macdonald-Laurier Institute Munk Senior Fellow Ken Coates is available to comment on the federal government’s decision, released this afternoon, to reject the Northern Gateway pipeline and approve the Line 3, Trans Mountain pipelines.
Coates, a thought leader on Indigenous issues, has long made the case that pipeline infrastructure is an unparalleled opportunity for First Nations, Métis and other Indigenous peoples to find a new economic footing.
Becoming full partners on energy projects can help Indigenous communities end the “national tragedy” of poor economic and social outcomes for their people.

Coates has also long been a proponent of looking for new ways to share the wealth of natural resources projects with Indigenous peoples.
This includes encouraging development companies to partner with Aboriginal communities by properly engaging and collaborating with them on natural resource projects. Giving them an equity position is one way to do this.
For governments, this means exploring options for sharing government revenue from natural resource projects with Aboriginal communities through a proposal known as resource revenue sharing.
