In this video, an actor playing Sir John A. Macdonald marks 150 years of Confederation by taking Canadians back to their founding.
Sir John A. Macdonald’s toast to colonial union, delivered at a banquet held in the dining hall of the Halifax Hotel, became one of his most celebrated speeches in support of Confederation.
The speech was given shortly after the famed Charlottetown Conference in 1864.
MLI is has been celebrating this year’s anniversary by publishing a major series of articles, one on each of Canada’s key founders, and posting a new speech each week so Canadians can appreciate their vision for Canada, in the founders’ own words.
