OTTAWA, ON (February 16, 2023): The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is pleased to welcome Kyoko Kuwahara and Sohyung Hyun as the Institute’s latest Visiting Fellows. Kyoko and Sohyung join MLI’s growing roster of experts, with Kyoko specializing in public diplomacy, strategic communications, disinformation and soft power strategies; and Sohyung Hyun specializing in public administration.
“MLI is proud to continue building partnerships and links with the world’s best thought leaders,” says Jonathan Berkshire Miller, MLI Senior Fellow and Director, Foreign Affairs, National Defence and National Security. “Kyoko and Sohyung will help enrich the debate and discussion in Canada on its interests both in the Indo-Pacific region, but also on common interests we face more broadly such as disinformation and the evolution of critical technologies.”
Prior to joining MLI as Visiting Fellows, Kuwahara served as an officer at the Office for Strategic Communication Hub at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan before joining the Japan Institute of International Affairs. Hyun served as a public official at the Ministry of Economy and Finance in the Republic of Korea, she has since been working in the area of the national budget, focusing on the Agriculture & Marine, and R&D Divisions respectively.
“I am honored to be MLI’s first Japanese Visiting Fellow,” says Kuwahara. “The past six months have seen a great deal of change in Canada-Japan relations, such as the announcement of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, the revision of Japan’s National Security Strategy, and PM Kishida’s visit to Canada. I look forward to continuing to work with my distinguished colleagues, and hopefully contribute to the further development of Canada-Japan relations.”
“I am honored to be a visiting fellow of MLI where the voices from various fields are contributing to Canadian public policy,” says Hyun. “I would like to be immersed in this vibrant atmosphere.”
