On March 16, 2011, the Ottawa citizen published an article by William Watson, Associate Professor of Economics at McGill University and member of the MLI Research Advisory Board. In his article, Watson states “though many who have taken to the streets in the Middle East in the last two months have expressed their hunger for liberty and democracy in the most eloquent possible terms, often giving up their lives for it, many others have been motivated mainly by the more literal hunger resulting from the rising price of basic foodstuffs.”
