OTTAWA, ON (February 20, 2020): The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is pleased to welcome our newest Distinguished Fellow, Professor Donald J. Savoie – Canada’s foremost expert on how our government works.

With a deep and wide career, Professor Savoie has had a long and profound influence over Canadian public policy for many years. As a Distinguished Fellow at MLI, his work will continue to shape the debates surrounding Canada’s most pressing policy challenges, particularly regarding domestic policy, governance, and federalism.

As MLI Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley has explained, Professor Savoie represents “the very best in terms of Canadian public policy thought leadership.”

“With his unique and unparalleled experience across a wide range of topics, Professor Savoie will contribute significantly to our ongoing work towards ensuring the very best decisions are made by policy-makers in Ottawa.”

Professor Savoie holds the Canada Research Chair in Public Administration and Governance (Tier 1) at the University of Moncton. His research achievements are prodigious and his influence on Canada’s public policy and Canadian public administration has been evident for years. He has won numerous prizes and awards both in Canada and at the international level for his work and has been awarded eight honorary degrees from Canadian universities and a D. Litt. from Oxford University in 2000. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1992 and made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1993.

Among his many accomplishments, Professor Savoie is also an acclaimed author, writing some of Canada’s most pivotal books on public policy, public administration, and federalism. He has also served as an advisor to governments, agencies, and businesses at virtually all levels.

According to Professor Savoie, “In ten short years the Macdonald-Laurier institute has established itself as Canada’s leading think tank. It has not only brought fresh insights to complex public policy issues but also made policy debates both more stimulating and accessible. I am delighted to be part of the team.”
