Markets aren’t just about money and goods.
Free exchange doesn’t only make people better off, as it moves capital and goods to their highest value use, it also makes us smarter. Free exchange allows ideas to become widely available and then subjects them to rigorous testing so that the best ones rise to the top. This “marketplace of ideas” is how we increase the supply of useful knowledge, moving ideas into the hands of those who can wring the greatest value out of them for society.
If our society is to thrive we must defend free inquiry; we must defend the “marketplace of ideas.”
