OTTAWA, July 16, 2012 – The Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Cross, who recently stepped down as the Chief Economic Analyst at Statistics Canada, as our new research and editorial co-ordinator. Mr. Cross will assume his new role as of July 16, 2012.
According to MLI Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley, “Philip Cross’s long and distinguished career as an independent and thoughtful analyst and interpreter of the Canadian economy adds a whole new dimension to MLI. We always aim to improve the quality of public policy by marshalling the very best research and data in the service of the national interest of Canadians, and there can be few people better qualified to perform this role in the economic field than Philip Cross. He is also a gifted writer, making complex issues and dry data come alive for non-specialist audiences. We are all delighted to welcome Philip to the Institute.”
Mr. Cross spent 36 years at Statistics Canada specializing in macroeconomics. He was appointed Chief Economic Analyst in 2008 and was responsible for ensuring quality and coherency of all major economic statistics. He is a frequent commentator on the economy and interpreter of Statistics Canada reports for the media and general public. He is also a former Fellow at the C.D. Howe Institute.
“I am delighted to be working with MLI, with its reputation for fearless and independent research and policy advice,” commented Mr. Cross on his appointment.
