MLI Senior Fellow and Arctic security expert, Robert Huebert, joined CBC News Network to discuss Russia’s new ambitions in the Arctic, the offensive capabilities they have developed, and how Canada can respond in the long run.
“There is a little bit of a red-herring effort in Canada to try to downplay what’s here: Putin is not going to land ground forces on Baffin Island or Ellesmere Island … It misses the point that the real threat that the Russians pose to us is an aerospace and maritime threat,” said Huebert. “When you have Putin saying that nuclear war is a possibility … we see that not only does he have the ability to talk about waging a tactical nuclear war, he’s got the capabilities.”
“The real danger is not so-much that he is going to invade … it’s whether or not he makes an attack on Eastern Europe if he thinks that we are re-supplying too effectively to the Ukrainians, and that’s what’s going to lose the war for him.”
