Munk Senior Fellow Christian Leuprecht spoke with CBC News about the ongoing war in Ukraine, touching on the battles raging in the Donbas region, Ukraine’s candidacy for EU membership, and warning of a potential waning in support for Ukraine as citizens of Western countries face higher living costs.
“Ukraine is running out of its own ordinance for its Soviet-era weapons, so it needs Western weapons to be able to continue the fight…As people start looking at the energy bills, their food bills, and what they’re paying to go on vacation, generally popular support in Western countries for the effort in Ukraine will wane. So what will be decided at the upcoming NATO summit in Spain will be critical both in terms the continued support for Ukraine, but also a more robust defensive posture among periphery NATO countries vis-a-vis Russian aggression.”
