MLI Munk Senior Fellow Christian Leuprecht spoke with CBC News about the recent Russian appointment of a general with combat experience in Syria to lead the invasion of Ukraine. “It suggests maybe the Kremlin is trying to give up running the war from afar with political leadership,” says Leuprecht. Instead, Russia might be “handing it to the military,” though he warns that “this might not be the experience you want because Syria … was primarily an air campaign.”
