OTTAWA, ON (November 12, 2021): The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is pleased to welcome SooJung Ji as the Institute’s first ever foreign Visiting Fellow. Ji joins MLI’s growing roster of renowned experts and will focus on Canada-Korea trade relations and regional trade agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
“SooJung Ji continues MLI’s tradition of welcoming the top experts to contribute to public policy in Canada,” says MLI Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley. “We hope Ji’s time with us in Ottawa will not only help guide the Canada-Korea relationship, but will also serve as a template for future visiting fellows.”
Prior to joining MLI as a Visiting Fellow, Ji served as a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) managing expert and Customs Executive Officer, with a career working in Korea Customs Service spanning over 19 years. In this role, Ji was responsible for verifying the authenticity and accuracy of the origin of import and export goods under existing FTAs. Additionally, she has served in FTA compliance consultations and supported companies in resolving international trade and customs issues.
According to MLI Indo-Pacific Program Director Jonathan Berkshire Miller, “Ji brings a formidable professional career and significant expertise in trade and foreign relations to the Institute. Her experience is a strong addition to our growing thought leadership on the Indo-Pacific region and its importance to Canada.”

In 2019, Ji received the Korea’s Presidential Award for her work in addressing the difficulties of overseas customs clearance in Brazil.
