OTTAWA, ON (December 11, 2020): The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is pleased to welcome Sarah Teich as our newest Senior Fellow, covering issues including international law, human rights, and counter-terrorism.
Teich is a Canadian attorney, consultant, and author sought for her expertise in international human rights law and national security law and policy. Her current affiliations include the Canadian Coalition Against Terror, the Canadian Security Research Group, and the International Counter-Terrorism Review.
“Sarah Teich has already made her mark in her nascent and impressive career,” says MLI’s Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley. “Her thought leadership was demonstrated in her landmark paper on state liability for COVID-19. She is exactly what the Institute needs, and we are eager to formally welcome her to our growing team.”
Teich has held research positions at the Munk School of Global Affairs (Toronto) and at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Israel. She has worked on classified projects for the International Criminal Court in the Hague and led a Canadian National Security Working Group delivering policy submissions to the Parliament of Canada.
She holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toronto and an MA (magna cum laude) in Counter-Terrorism and Homeland Security. Teich has also studied law at the National University of Singapore.
As MLI’s Senior Fellow for international law, human rights, and counter terrorism, Teich will advance the Institute’s ongoing work on national security and foreign affairs, with a particular focus on authoritarian regimes.
According to Shuvaloy Majumdar, MLI Program Director and Munk Senior Fellow for Foreign Policy, “not only does Sarah Teich have an already accomplished career, but she has also produced innovative research with novel solutions to tackle some of the most pressing global challenges as we enter into a post-COVID era. We are thrilled to have her join the Institute.”
“As the global community recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, and focuses its attention on the threat posed by resurgent authoritarianism, it is time to start seriously reassessing how we deal with the world’s autocrats. MLI continues to be the leading and authoritative voice on issues like the Chinese Communist Party’s aggression and the need for a stronger, more principled Canadian foreign policy,” says Teich. “I’m delighted to be a part of that effort.”
