OTTAWA, ON (October 25, 2019): The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is pleased to formally welcome our newest Senior Fellow, Peter Menzies. Menzies will be contributing to the Institute’s work on telecommunications, broadcasting, and cultural policy.
Menzies brings three decades of experience in journalism and media to his work at MLI. He is best known for his role at the Calgary Herald, where Menzies served with distinction as its editorial page editor, editor in chief and, finally, publisher. More recently, Menzies served for close to 10 years in various high-level roles for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Menzies’ addition as a senior fellow will be a tremendous boost for MLI’s efforts to make poor telecommunications policy unacceptable in Canada.

In his various roles at the CRTC, Menzies has been involved in major decisions involving service to northern and other remote communities, the establishment of the national emergency alerting system and the setting of the criteria establishing the Basic Service Objectives for telecommunications in Canada. Prior to his involvement at MLI, Menzies worked with other think tanks and civil society organizations, providing support and consultation on topics such as media matters, the impact of the Internet on society, and more.
As Dr. Crowley explains, “Peter has precisely the kind of practical policy experience, media savvy and profile that we love to see in our senior fellows.”
Most recently, Menzies has been producing regular published works on media, communications, and other topics in a variety of publications, including the Victoria Times-Colonist, Winnipeg Free Press, Hamilton Spectator, Halifax Chronicle Herald, Convivium Magazine, the Globe & Mail, National Post and Toronto Star. Outside his writing responsibilities, Menzies also provides advice to a wide range of tech companies.
“I am excited to be working with MLI to help raise the profile of important issues like Canadian telecommunications policy,” Menzies said. “MLI exists in a unique place in the world of public policy, and I am eager to contribute to the work of the Institute.”
