Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams caught many off guard yesterday with his sudden announcement that he would be leaving politics on December 3rd.
Naturally, this surprise has been cause for comment down on the Rock and across the land. Pretty much every one agrees that Mr. Williams was a masterful political force and politician. He stirred the embers of inspiration within each and every Newfoundlander at a time when such a boost was needed. Of this we can all be sure.
But, he also had the darker side of the political ledger to his style. The two sides of the Williams coin are captured perfectly by MLI’s Brian Lee Crowley in today’s National Post.
“It’s been a period filled with progress for Newfoundland, but equally a period of great damage to Newfoundland’s reputation outside the province.”
