OTTAWA, ON (April 6, 2018): For the latest edition of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Straight Talk Q & As, MLI spoke with J. Michael Cole, a Taipei-based senior fellow with the China Policy Institute, University of Nottingham. This Straight Talk is based on Cole’s recent podcast with MLI’s Pod Bless Canada.
As the Taiwan Strait continues to be one of the most dangerous flashpoints in the Indo-Pacific, Cole provides ample reason why Canada needs to pay greater attention to what is happening to Taiwan. Click here to read.
MLI and J. Michael Cole discuss:
- China’s challenge to international order and global rules
- China’s growing authoritarianism under Xi Jinping
- Canadian interests in Taiwan
- How Canada should engage with China
“I think we need to realize that China needs us as much as we need it,” says Cole. “China does not try to acquire businesses in Canada or invest in Canada or even sign a free trade agreement in Canada out of good will or a sense of charity. It engages us because it wants certain things that we have to offer.” To read the full Straight Talk Q & A, click here.
