Dwight Newman has already published extensively with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute on the “duty to consult” with Aboriginal peoples, Tsilhqot’in Supreme Court decision
OTTAWA, Nov. 19, 2014 – The Macdonald-Laurier Institute has added Aboriginal affairs expert Dwight Newman as a Senior Fellow.
Newman, a law professor at the University of Saskatchewan, has carved out a meaningful place in the Canadian legal landscape with his research on Aboriginal affairs as they relate to natural resource development.
He has published extensively on the constitutional “duty to consult” with Aboriginals. He also led the analysis on a pair of Supreme Court decisions – the Tsilhqot’in and Grassy Narrows rulings – that changed the game on Aboriginal land title rights claims.

Newman, who is also a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Rights and International Law, has already made his presence felt at MLI.
The paper he released earlier this year, titled “The Rule and Role of Law: The duty to consult, Aboriginal communities and the Canadian natural resource sector”, earned MLI coverage in newspapers across the country.
The paper he co-authored with MLI Senior Fellow Ken Coates on the Tsilhqot’in and Grassy Narrows decisions, “The End is Not Nigh: Reason over alarmism in analysing the Tsilhqot’in decision”, provided leading analysis on a still-developing topic.
He also commented extensively on both issues in the media. In addition to several op-eds, he contributed to a live chat with the National Post on the impact of the decision.
Newman is also the author of a soon-to-be-released MLI commentary on the problems involved in demands that resource companies obtain a “social licence” to operate.
