MLI senior fellow and counter-terror expert Sarah Teich spoke with CBC’s Andrew Nichols following the federal government’s decision to designate the Proud Boys and other far-right extremist groups as terrorist entities in Canada.
“Putting any entity on the terrorist list comes with real, meaningful, and concrete consequences,” explained Teich. “It’s a very powerful move.”
“This is a very clear signal that Canada is taking right wing extremism very seriously.”
Teich noted that the threat of far-right extremism has been rising internationally for several years. She raised some concern however regarding the timing and potential politicization of how groups are being added to the list of terrorist entities.
