Ramona Coelho

Expert Overview

Dr. Ramona Coelho, MDCM, CCFP, is a family physician based in London, Ontario. She began her medical career as a home care physician at CLSC Metro in Montreal, Quebec. There she developed a strong foundation in providing compassionate care to patients in their homes who had addictions or complex care needs or who were dying. After relocating to London, Coelho established a family practice that primarily serves individuals living with disabilities, mental health disorders, and other marginalized groups.

Coelho is a well-recognized advocate for vulnerable populations, frequently lending her expertise to legislative discussions. She has served as an expert witness before both the House and Senate committees examining Bill C-7, which addressed Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). Additionally, she contributed to the federal Special Joint Committee on MAiD.

Coelho is also a founding member of Physicians Together with Vulnerable Canadians, an organization dedicated to supporting those at risk, and she serves on the MAiD Death Review Committee, which works with Ontario’s Office of the Chief Coroner to address public safety concerns in reviewing MAiD cases.

She is also a member of the Expert Advisory Group on MAiD for Mental Illness, and is an advisory council member of SocPsych, a society dedicated to preserving the integrity of psychiatry as a biopsychosocial evidence based science.

A recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal, she is also an adjunct research professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University. In addition to her academic and journal publications, she is co-editor of the upcoming book, Unravelling MAiD in Canada: Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide as Medical Care (MQUP 2025).
