OTTAWA, ON (September 3, 2025):
Canada is failing to defend its democratic ally Israel as the Jewish state faces a coordinated campaign of antisemitic lawfare and discrimination at international courts and UN bodies.
In The cost of silence: How Canada is falling short in the global fight against antisemitism, international human rights lawyer David Matas reveals how Canada systematically accommodates anti-Israel bias rather than standing up for the Middle East’s only democracy on the world stage.
The failures are concrete and consequential. Canada funds UNRWA – an organization that employed Hamas terrorists who participated in the October 7, 2023, massacre against Israel, and others that celebrated the attack. Canada announced it will enforce arrest warrants against Israeli leaders while Hamas terrorists who launched the October 7 attacks against Israel remain beyond the court’s reach. Canada suspended military co-operation with democratic Israel while maintaining relationships with authoritarian regimes.
At the United Nations, Canada votes for anti-Israel resolutions that disproportionately target the Jewish state while ignoring worse human rights abusers. Demonizing Israel simply for being a Jewish state has become normalized, and Canada chooses accommodation over resistance.
The implications extend far beyond Jewish communities. Canada’s credibility on human rights and international justice is being systematically undermined. By funding organizations linked to terrorism while abandoning democratic allies, Canada signals that principles can be sacrificed for political convenience. This damages Canada’s ability to lead on other human rights issues and weakens its standing with key allies.
Matas documents how antisemitism has adapted and rebranded itself globally through anti-Zionism, yet Canada’s political leaders choose consensus-building over moral clarity. The result is a betrayal of Jewish Canadians and democratic principles.
Canada must defund antisemitic organizations, reject politicized arrest warrants, restore co-operation with Israel, and vote against disproportionate UN targeting of the Jewish state. The world’s oldest hatred is winning, and Canada is helping it.
