On November 22, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute hosted a breakfast panel at the Rideau Club in Ottawa on the theme of shifting global dynamics, with a focus on the future of Taiwan as a critical focal point in the Indo-Pacific region.
A notable guest was Dr. Roy Chun Lee, Deputy Foreign Minister of Taiwan who joined MLI Managing Director Dr. Brian Lee Crowley in making opening remarks and introductions before joining the panel.
The panel was moderated by Jonathan Berkshire Miller, Director of the Foreign Policy Program and senior fellow at MLI and included Kerry Lynn S. Nankivell, Director of Strategic Assessments at the Department of National Defence, Dr. Balkan Devlen, Director of the Transatlantic Program and senior fellow at MLI, as well as senior fellows J. Michael Cole and Dr. Scott Simon.
The panel discussed rising regional tensions and the urgent need to address the challenges posed by a resurgent China while upholding democratic values and supporting regional democracies. The panel also took an in-depth look at the multifaceted issues surrounding Taiwan’s geopolitical significance and the strategies Canada can pursue to help ensure its continued stability and prosperity
