Another tough school year has come to an end. It’s now time we show some appreciation for the teachers who helped Canadian kids get through the pandemic, including the school closures and other very serious learning challenges created by government policies.
Teaching was considered a thankless job well before COVID, but it has only gotten more so. During the past school year, Ontario faced a teacher shortage and an Alberta Teachers Association survey found that over one-third of Alberta teachers are contemplating leaving the profession or their home province.
It’s not hard to see why teachers across Canada would feel as if they’ve been pushed to their limits. The job has changed dramatically on numerous occasions over the past two years. Uncertainty over whether schools would be open and if they’d be safe took a heavy toll. Adjusting to remote learning was difficult for students and teachers alike.
