MLI’s Managing Director, Brian Lee Crowley, will be presenting before the Standing Committee on International Trade on the topic of the Abitibi-Bowater Settlement on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. The hearings arise from a mandate given to the Standing Committee to undertake a study on the $130 million paid by the federal government to Abitibi Bowater as a settlement of its claim under NAFTA’s investor protection provisions (Chapter 11), and the impact of this settlement on future democratic decisions taken in the public interest by Canadian governments at all levels.
