OTTAWA, ON (Jan. 24, 2018): Ian Lee, author of the MLI paper, Is the Cheque Still in the Mail? The Internet, e-commerce, and the future of the Canada Post Corporation, commented today on the federal government’s decision to make a permanent freeze on converting home delivery to community mailboxes:
“Unfortunately, today’s decision by the Government of Canada yet again postpones difficult decisions in kicking the problem of collapsing mail volumes down the road.
“Since 2006, the number of addresses that must be served by law has increased by 1.7 million – while the volume of mail to each household has decreased by 44%.
“By next year, half of Canada Post’s volume will have vanished into the Internet ether.
“Today’s decision will actually make Canada Post’s position worse for it will increase costs while revenues continue to decline.
“And it will ensure a minority of households – the wealthiest households in the urban centres of Canada including the Glebe in Ottawa, Rosedale in Toronto will continue to have door to door delivery while the vast majority of Canadians will continue with community mailboxes.”
