What does the future hold for environmental assessment in Canada?
Bram Noble, an expert on how to better engage Canadians through the environmental assessment process, answers that question in a new video for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
The video is the first part in a series aimed at providing Canadians with thought leadership on the future of engaging with Canadians on the major natural resource projects integral to the country’s future.
“I would really like to see the emergence of more Aboriginal-led environmental assessment systems,” says Noble in the video.
“Right now we have federal and provincial and territorial in the North…but I would really like to see some capacity-building and development around Aboriginal-led EA for projects that are on Aboriginal territory.”
The video features Noble in conversation with MLI Munk Senior Fellow Ken Coates, a thought leader on Indigenous engagement in Canada.
Earlier this year Noble authored a paper for MLI on how to reform the environmental assessment process so it works better for Indigenous peoples, businesses and governments.
MLI wants its thought leadership on Indigenous engagement to be a guide for the government as it seeks to alter environmental assessment in Canada.
