Anti-Contraband Tobacco Working Group convenes discussion in Toronto on 
March 3
TORONTO, March 2, 2015 – Key experts will meet to discuss the latest tax and enforcement ideas to combat the trade of illicit tobacco products in Ontario and effectively stem its role in funding crime.
The Anti-Contraband Tobacco Working Group will convene ahead of the Ontario budget to discuss ideas presented by Dr. Christian Leuprecht, Political Science Associate Professor at the Royal Military College of Canada.
He will share the very latest research on tax and enforcement solutions to a growing and pervasive contraband problem. Among his findings, the argument that a joint First Nations-provincial excise tax is key to a broader strategy to stem the flow of illicit cigarettes.
Dr. Leuprecht will be joined by:
- Tasha Kheiriddin, writer, broadcaster and policy expert
- Jim Ransom, Director, Tehotiiennawakon, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne
- Nachum Gabler, economist and tax policy specialist
- Sgt. John Jones, Sûreté du Quebec
Chief Steve Thomas Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and Marc Sharrett Director, Program Policy & Analytics Branch, Ontario Ministry of Economic Development & Trade will deliver special remarks.
