As part of Voices that Inspire: the Macdonald-Laurier Speaker Series, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute was honoured to host renowned historian and public intellectual Sir Niall Ferguson for an armchair discussion with MLI Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley in Vancouver.
The conversation examined the West’s loss of strategic confidence amid growing internal divisions, authoritarian resurgence, and rapid technological and geopolitical change. Drawing on history, Ferguson explored what past cycles of decline and renewal can teach us about resilience, leadership, and moral purpose, and considered what Canada must do to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and identity in an increasingly contested global order.
