Speaking to the Star Phoenix newspaper in Saskatoon, MLI Senior Fellow Ken Coates and author Dwight Newman say a recent decision from the Supreme Court that expanded Aboriginal land title for First Nations will carry important implications for Metis groups.
The Tsilhqot’in decision, which the court handed down last month, has Metis people in Saskatchewan also looking to assert their land claims.
Newman suggests this “may open a Pandora’s box of conflicts with First Nations”, but Coates believes the best way to deal with this will be to negotiate.
