David A. Detomasi

Expert Overview

David A. Detomasi is a professor of International Business at Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business and a Distinguished Faculty Fellow in International Business. He completed his PhD from the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University in 1999, specializing in international political economy. He also holds a Master of Arts in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Queen’s University, and is a graduate of the Executive Program on the Global Financial System from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and the Executive Program on Corporate Governance from Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

Detomasi’s research interests include globalization, geopolitics and global business, corporate strategy, and corporate and non-profit governance. His book Profits and Power: Navigating the Politics and Geopolitics of Oil, was published in the summer of 2022 by the University of Toronto Press.

He teaches international business, strategy, governance, and the geopolitics of global competition in undergraduate, MBA, and executive education programs at the Smith School of Business, and has also taught in Europe and the United Arab Emirates. He previously served as Academic Director of Global Business and as Academic Director of the Fundamentals of Governance Program (for five years) at Queen's Executive Development Centre.

His scholarly research has appeared in such publications as the Journal of Business Ethics, International Studies Review, Global Governance, Defence Analysis, and the Canadian Review of American Studies. Detomasi has authored numerous teaching cases and practitioner notes and regularly contributes to public interest journals and news media, and is an expert on global business practice, competitiveness, strategy, and governance.
