OTTAWA, September 14, 2012 – The Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI) is pleased to announce that world-renowned economist Paul Romer has agreed to join MLI’s expanding roster of distinguished Senior Fellows.
“We may only be two and a half years old,” says MLI Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley, “but already our reach is global, and the top thinkers in public policy around the world are associating themselves with us because of the quality of our work and the breadth of our interests. Paul Romer is a shining example. One of the world’s most prominent economists, Paul is doing path breaking work on urbanization and economic growth. We are looking forward to making his work in this field better known to audiences in Canada and abroad. We couldn’t be prouder to welcome Paul to the institute’s list of distinguished Senior Fellows.”
According to Romer, “A dramatic reduction in debt-to-GDP levels, a stable financial system, an effective educational system – these are just a few of the many reasons why Canada should be a model for the world. MLI will give me an excellent base for learning from these successes and spreading them to other countries.”
Paul Romer will be MLI’s Senior Fellow in Urbanization and Economic Development. He is a Professor of Economics and the Director of the Urbanization Project at the New York University Stern School of Business. Romer founded Charter Cities, a non-profit focused on policies at the intersection of governance, urbanization, and development. Prior to joining Stern, Romer taught at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, where he took an entrepreneurial detour to start Aplia, an education technology company dedicated to increasing student effort and engagement. In 2002, he received Recktenwald Prize for his work on the role of ideas in sustaining economic growth. Romer is co-author of Success and the City: How charter cities could transform the developing world, published by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in April 2012.
