TORONTO (March 26, 2012) – The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, today will address leading experts in energy, the environment and transportation at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s conference, Moving Canada Ahead: Fuelling Prosperity and Sustainability in our Transport System, sponsored by the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute. Minister Oliver will discuss modernizing Canada’s regulatory system to ensure responsible development and continued opportunities for jobs and economic growth in the resources sector. He will underscore the importance of the country’s natural resources to the economy, with a spotlight focus on Ontario, and emphasize that Canada is facing tremendous opportunity to capitalise on natural resource development in a period of global economic uncertainty. Minister Oliver will deliver his address beginning at 6:30 p.m. and a media availability will follow.
The evening will also feature keynote speaker John Hofmeister, best-selling author of Why We Hate the Oil Companies: Straight Talk from an Energy Insider. He is Founder and Chief Executive of Citizens for Affordable Energy (Washington, DC) and Former President of Shell Oil Company (Houston, Texas). His keynote address beginning at 7:30 p.m. will speak to the role of hydrocarbons in our society and how we can promote their economic, social and cultural value now, while still addressing future use in responsible and sustainable ways.
Moving Canada Ahead: Fuelling Prosperity and Sustainability in our Transport System brings together experts from both Canada and abroad to discuss the measurable costs and benefits of various policy choices around fuel in Canada’s transport sector with respect to fuel composition, fuel types, technological innovation, and regulatory and legal requirements at both the federal and provincial levels. The conference will take place from March 26 to 27 at The Westin Harbour Castle, 1 Harbour Square, in Toronto. Minister Oliver’s opening remarks and John Hofmeister’s keynote address on March 26 will be open to the media.
