NATO leaders convened under the shadow of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine on June 29th in Madrid to talk about the future of the Alliance. NATO’s new Strategic Concept was announced at the summit. It updated the 2010 Strategic Concept, identifying Russia as the immediate and direct threat to the Alliance and China as a strategic challenge. The Alliance also moved forward with membership applications of Sweden and Finland after Turkey lifted its veto at the last minute.
