As both Ottawa and the provinces face the need to balance their books sooner rather than later, and given the controversy surrounding public sector bargaining in American states such as Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana, it is inevitable that Canada will have to think about the cost of providing many services through the public sector. The Financial Post’s Paul Vieira has written a long article, entitled Reining in public unions, raising just these issues. He interviewed MLI’s Brian Lee Crowley, who said: “You are going to find parties will make political hay out of the fiscal decline and point to the growth and the size and cost of public sector as a key factor.”
