The federal government has given the go-ahead to two major pipelines projects – Trans Mountain and Line 3 – while rejecting Northern Gateway.

“It’s going to change the nature of the debate and the intensity of the conflict”, says Coates of the pipeline decisions. He says that while the new Liberal government is no doubt sincere in its desire for reconciliation, he worries they have raised the expectations of Indigenous peoples too high, and many are now feeling extremely disappointed as the government faces the complex realities of Indigenous relations.
