MLI Managing Director, Brian Lee Crowley, was in the US capital this week for a series of meetings and public appearances. One stop was at the prestigious Canadian Studies Program at the School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. They invited Brian and Jason Clemens, two of the co-authors of Canadian Century, to address students, faculty and Canada-watchers in the US capital on the content of MLI’s first book.
Canadian Studies Program Director Charles Doran kicked off the session by observing that he had read Canadian Century thoroughly and found that it was based on neither left nor right wing views, but on common sense. The presentations were followed by a lively exchange with the audience that included a number of questions about how Canada had managed to achieve such important economic and fiscal reforms when America’s politicians seem so incapable of rising to the same challenge.
When asked how the audience reacted to a lecture on and about Canada, Crowley observed, “The view in the room was clearly that Canada’s great fiscal and economic progress, as recounted in Canadian Century, should not be the extraordinary achievement of one country, but the bedrock starting point for democracies everywhere.”
