In an exclusive op-ed in the latest edition of Inside Policy, the magazine of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, MP Michael Chong makes the case for his Reform Act, and urges his fellow Members of Parliament to come together to pass the legislation and return power to MPs, putting a check on party leaders. Chong writes that “The rules governing Canada’s Parliament, and those governing the election of MPs and party leaders, have changed significantly over the years. These changes, occurring over many decades under different parties and leaders, have weakened the role of MPs and centralized power in party leaders”. He adds that “Canadians are losing faith in their democratic institutions”.
Chong says his bill would restore local control over party nominations, increase the power of MPs within parties, and “reinforce the accountability of the party leader”. To read the entire article click here.
