Honoured guests Derek Burney, and via videolink, James Baker, to discuss the legacy of historic Canada-U.S. FTA 25 years later
OTTAWA – Exactly 25 years ago this November, Canadians were voting on a proposal to sign a free trade deal with the Americans. To mark this momentous occasion, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute is hosting a gala dinner in Calgary on Thursday, November 21st, 2013.
The dinner promises to be a remarkable evening of celebrating the anniversary of that 1988 election. The two key negotiators of the Canada-US free trade deal, Derek Burney, former Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and James Baker III, former US Secretary of State and Chief of Staff to President George Bush, (via videolink), will join us to reminisce about the negotiations leading up to the historic agreement, and discuss the lasting legacy of Canada-U.S. free trade.
The event provides a great opportunity for the business and political community of Western Canada to come together and remember not only the historic achievement of Canada signing the Free Trade Agreement with the US, but also fighting a successful battle to have it ratified by the electorate, and the new era of prosperity and continental co-operation to which it gave rise. The discussion will be moderated by Licia Corbella, Editorial Page Editor of the Calgary Herald.
