Dr. Scott E. Simon (PhD, Anthropology, McGill University, 1998) is Full Professor in the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies at the University of Ottawa, as well as MLI Senior Fellow for Taiwan, Human Rights, and the Indo-Pacific. A specialist in Taiwan, he has done research in Taiwan since 1996, most recently for 12 months in 2023–24. Most of his research has been on Indigenous rights, based on field research in Truku and Sediq communities. He has also done field research in Japan and Guam. In addition to research in Taiwan, he has done archival and historical research in Ottawa on Canada-Taiwan relations and Canadian foreign policy in regard to Taiwan. He is author of four books about Taiwan, among other academic publications, and often contributes to policy discussions regarding Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific. His most recent book is Truly Human: Indigeneity and Indigenous Resurgence on Formosa (University of Toronto Press, 2023).
